Leaving behind comfort and security, Jon packed two 55-gallon barrels of medical supplies and boarded a plane to Iraq. His plan was naïve but noble: teach Kurdish fighters the basics of battlefield medicine. Once on the ground, however, Jon was pulled into the war itself. With no translator, no connections, and no clear path forward, he found himself thrust into the role of frontline medic.

Facing relentless gunfire, mortar attacks, and a bounty placed on his head by ISIS, Jon saved countless lives—while enduring the devastating reality of those he could not.
